here's how I'm feeling today...

indian summer

Polyvore.com is my new favorite toy! Seriously, it gets my heart pumping. It brings out my creative side and lets me create looks I would never have the money to do in real life. I almost feel like I've been shopping!

This look I titled Indian Summer. It is full of looks that are not too outrageous aka totally doable. And I must say that the source of inspiration started with the canvas Coach graphic bag. Too bad it is over $800. I can't decide what I like most between the vintage Tiffany bracelet, the Coach bag, or the mocs!

Kirksville

While at dinner yesterday with my dad, stepmom (visiting from KC), and brother, I was telling them about an episode of "This American Life" I had listened to earlier that day. It was titled "Accidental Documentaries" and consisted of three acts about audio tapes that had been found in thrift stores, attics, and basements. These discoveries preserved small segments of history for a family, town, and American life in general. The second act was about Ira Glass, the show's host, and some tapes he had found in his basement. When he played those tapes, he found out that his own father had had a career in radio. He never knew that. It was never talked about.

As I was telling them about that, Ann says, "I saved every tape of your dad's radio show."
I blinked, "Excuse me?"

Turns out I lived a total deja-vu last night. Ira Glass never knew about his father's radio career, and I had NO IDEA my own dad had a radio show in Kirksville Missouri. It was a weekly talk show spot where my dad led question and answer sessions about mental health.

I decided for my dad that he needs to write a book. They lived in Kirksville for, I don't know, like 2 years maybe. It's a short enough amount of time to write about a detailed memoir of their time in a small rural town, flanked with a prestigious university, a medical school, and a reknowned mental health hospital. That mixture always calls for very interesting encounters among a variety of people. I was thinking for his book (I'm serious about this) :) my dad should outline his encounters on his mental health radio forum and use them to segway into his own personal memoirs. For my dad and stepmom, that town served as a fresh beginning for two scandalized families.

My memories of Kirksville include the whole every other weekend ordeal that many divorced children have to go through. That included the dreaded 3 hour, hilly, carsick, car ride from Kansas City. There were still some rough patches in Dad and Ann's new marriage, which no kid should have to be aware of, but I knew they loved us. There were many wonderful memories such as running across the busy highway to go to the pool, a tornado, sharing a duplex with a wealthy and kind black doctor, the seemingly endless plot of land we lived on, the awesome halloween grave yard we created in the front yard, and a hilariously awful amature circus.

Kirksville left enough of a mark on us that Bremen and I chose to go to school there as undergrads. And wow, what wonderful memories I have during my 4 months there before I transfered to BYU. I would never go back on that decision.

So though we all had lives in Kansas City both before and after our short time in Kirksville. That place was important to our family. Maybe we should ALL write our own stories and combine them into one book, like in an essay format. I'm telling you. It would be good. There's rumors of my step-sister sneaking out the window at night to go kiss boys. There's also the drama and real heartache of watching my step-brother suffer from a deadly disease. And to this day, a walmart stands as one of the greatest forms of entertainment with horse and buggy hook-ups for all the Amish people!

roommate wanted! UPDATE: position filled

The same day I posted this I was talking to the girl who recently bought my housing contract from me. I told her I was moving up the street to a new apartment. She said, "I thought I was moving into that apartment..." Turns out we had been talking to two different roommates and both of them agreed to let us move in. So Lillian and I decided to share the room. I would have loved to live with a friend, but though she and I are pretty different, she is kind and respectful so I think it will be nice living with her.

Dear friends,

Starting August 23, I will be needing a roommate. I thought I'd start spreading the word among people I know (and like!) in hopes that one of you might want to be my roomie! or know someone as equally cool. So do you need an excuse to move to DC? Want to help a sista out? Think you'll be here and want to find an affordable and nice apartment to live in? Think about it!

It will be a shared large room with a 1/2 bath. There are two separate closets and two windows. There is another bathroom with a shower and bathtub that will be shared by 4 girls. It has a spacious living room, dining area, and kitchen. There is also a balcony that looks out to the woods behind the apartment.

It is just down the street from the Parkside complex's clubhouse, awesome pool, and tennis courts. The metro stop is about a 12 min walk. The complex houses MANY LDS YSA in the WDC 2nd ward.

The shared room will be $400 a month with an extra $30 for cable and internet. Utilities are included!

Let me know if you are interested.

it's not all slumber parties and fireflies...

What exactly is the purpose of my blog?
well...I use it brag about my awesome life and I use it to complain about things.

So most of my posts lately have been about awesome stuff so now I will take the opportunity to complain.

1) I'm living in a horrible situation right now. My roommates are great, that's not the problem. Even the roaring metro train doesn't really bother me anymore. Honestly, not having the a/c on is not that bad either. We've been blessed with a fairly cool summer. What does bother me? The carpets of dust everywhere I look. The smell of stale, dust-caked, overflowing closet full of half used toiletries. The fact that when the a/c is turned on I about die of coughing fits. The mold growing everywhere. I could go on and on, but I'm stopping to say that I don't see much changing anytime soon and so therefore I am NOT PAYING RENT until the situation is resolved or until I can move out with my full deposit check tucked away in my pocket.

2) At my office, we have a bathroom phantom. What is this? Many many times when I enter the restroom it is silent and I think there is no one in there. I soon hear a very faint rustle and learn that there is in fact someone in one of the stalls just sitting there. For a long time. I have a shy bladder. I despise public restrooms. The fact that someone is just sitting there listening to every move I make...well, I find it intrusive, creepy, and gross. And when I'm at the mirror or washing my hands, I know she is just sitting there watching me through the cracks of the door. If you're too shy to do your business while someone else is in the restroom, you do not have the right to creep out everyone else who comes in within the next 30 minutes.

3) Guys, my daily commute is inhumane. Since the big accident last week, the red line is a disaster and I learned today that it will continue to be this way for at least a year. I live pretty far out of town. I'm four stops from the beginning of the line, where every morning empty trains start their journey. By the time the trains get to my stop, they are already at standing room only. And there are still 10+ stops to go to get to downtown. Each stop, more and more people push their way on. It gets so packed and sweaty and miserable that I often feel like I could faint. Not to mention, it is so unreliable now I find myself getting to work half an hour late sometimes. People yell at each other and fights are breaking out.

miserable living situation+miserable commute+bathroom phantom=not really a wonderful existance
