Shopping for a greeting card for a boss is not easy. I'm an absolute card SNOB. In fact I rarely use them. Recently on two different occasions I was asked to purchase a group card for two different bosses (not this boss) who were going through a hard time. The reason why it's hard is because
1) Sympathy cards and get well cards are fewer in stock and are either incredible cheesy or painfully sappy.
2) Both times I was asked to purchase a card while on the clock so I felt rushed. But both times I still felt the need to read and reread every single example.
3) I work in an artistic atmosphere where aesthetics are important to all involved so therefore the card I choose is a reflection of my aesthetic taste. Also, the card is from "everyone" so it is a reflection of the museum as a whole.
4) It's nearly impossible to find a decent image (NOT the open backside of a hospital gown worn by an old man) with an appropriate message on the inside (NOT "Hope you get Well-ephant")

the Nie
If you haven't heard of or haven't checked up on NieNie dialogues (Stephanie Nielson) than you MUST by clicking here! This woman is amazing and her story brings tears to my eyes- both sad and happy tears but lately mostly happy. It's been a year since her almost fatal airplane crash, and I've been following her this whole time. I don't know if we've ever even lived in the same state. She doesn't know me, but I feel like I know her. That's the gift she's given to so many. She's really gaining her life back, and I'm so happy for her.

new boss humiliation round 2
Do you all remember my Cheeto humiliation with my new boss? Well, unfortunately I had another embarrassing moment with him yesterday...
It was the end of a busy and stressful work day. I stepped into an elevator with a man who works on another floor. Two more of my co-workers darted through the closing elevator doors. As the door was closing, I saw my new boss's pink shirt rushing towards the elevator (He's really tall so his shirt is at most people's eye level). As I was pushed to the back, there was nothing I could do to let him on. Another co-worker jabbed his hand through the closing doors and they bounced back open enough for my new boss to get on. There was some friendly banter about how we are a loyal company, "willing to lose a hand for each other," etc., etc. The man who works on the other floor said, "So you're all in the museum business?" My new boss chuckled, "Yep. We're all lucky to have jobs right now."
Lately I've been a little worried about this new boss. He's young, a go-getter, here to make some changes, etc. He's even spoken with me about cutting my position. I've thought, "If I lose my job, it will be because of him." And he's arrogant. He kind of irks me.
So we get to the ground level and the elevator doors open. No one moves. I say, "Goodbye everybody!" and squeeze my way off. I guess my new boss and another male co-worker follow me off because I can hear them chatting behind me. I hold the doors for them as I exit the building. I turn right, they turn left...or so I thought.
I consider myself a pretty quiet person. Sometimes I'll go several hours without speaking a word. But when I think I'm alone and when I'm irritated about something, sometimes I wear my feelings on my face and SOMETIMES I utter things to myself.
As I was walking down the sidewalk, I was thinking about my new boss's chuckle about being lucky to have a job in a museum. I was thinking about the time he proposed that my position was not really needed. I rolled my eyes at the memory of him suggesting I apply for a paid internship at another museum. And the culminating thought escaped my lips in a bitter utterance...
"He's out to get me!"
What happen next happened so fast and so simultaneously that you have to really pay attention here. I said those words out loud and then instantly heard a familiar voice right next to me...
"SO how was the tour you went on today?!" (I took an hour off that afternoon to tag along on a tour at the museum)
I saw a pink shirt out of the corner of my eye. I felt electricity shoot through my body and it made my hands tingle. This was partially due to being startled, partially out of mortification that my new boss was indeed right next to me as I had cursed his existance, and partially that another human being probably witnessed me talking to myself.
I have no idea if he heard me or not, but it is EXTREMELY likely. I just kept thinking, "I can't believe this is happening!" But of course I just played it off and starting telling him about how wonderful the tour was and he should go take one as soon as he gets a chance.
And then he bounded off into the traffic--not wanted to wait at the crosswalk with me until the light changed.

good week
Sorry for the blog-abandonment lately. It's not that my life has been boring, it's just that I haven't been good about taking/uploading pictures. What's a blog post without visual evidence?
Well I decided it's time for an update anyway. Starting with last night and working my way back.
Last night was such a peaceful evening. I got home a little before 6 and straightway changed into my speedo/cap/goggle get up and headed for the pool for a workout. Swimming your workouts in the summer is.so.much.better. than running in the humid heat. I love swim workouts where I feel powerful and almost desperate to keep moving faster and faster. When I swim I laugh to myself about how much more enjoyable it is to workout when the pressure of Coach Nancy is gone and the clocks are off and it's an outdoor pool. I cooked dinner and then my roommates and I watched 27 dresses. Then I showered and was in bed by 11:00.
Earlier that day I gave a Finding Faith in Christ dvd to my co-worker.
Tuesday evening I visited my friend Sheryl's cute mom Lea who has the most gorgeous cheekbones in the world and says, "Come home! This is your home."
Monday I worked out at my work's small gym, showered, then walked down to the Mall (that's the National Mall) for Screen on the Green. I met with a group of friends, ate pizza, chips, and plums, and played phase 10 till the sun went down. Then danced wildly under the stars for about 20 seconds while the HBO theme song came on, as is tradition. We watched the late 50s classic, "On the Waterfront" which really effected me positively. I loved it. I'm so glad I watched it because the very next day the screen writer died in his 90s.
Tonight I'm going to go teaching with the sister missionaries and I've been praying for our lesson since last night. I hope it works out and that the spirit is there to testify of the truth.
I love summer.I love DC.I love the gospel.
